Paintings Recall an Encounter in Colorado

Recently while cleaning my studio cupboards I came across some older paintings of mine that I used in a Travel book I’d made for a family gift one Christmas. In the last blog I showed you my buffalo painting. This time I’m spotlighting a watercolor of Mule Deer I encountered on a summer trip to Colorado.

Here’s the story behind it…

Just north of Denver, Colorado, on an early morning hike alone( and feeling lonely) I stepped over a slight ridge on a wooded trail and came face to face with a herd of mule deer. I froze. The tension was palpable. The closest deer looked at me with wide surprised eyes and then instead of moving away from me, he snorted and bounded past me, the entire herd following. There must have been twenty and I’d interrupted their morning breakfast. I still remember the sound of their hooves on the soft dirt path and the feel of the wind as they brushed past me. I was left in the clearing with the sun shining through the thick green branches…

Take a look at items in the shop you can purchase with these deer.
